Indian Railways: 'Kavach 4.0' Gets Smarter; How It Will Protect Trains with Greater Precision
Indian Railways has launched 'Kavach 4.0' to bolster train safety. It has been implemented on a 108-route-kilometer stretch of the Malkajgiri-Kamareddy section within the Hyderabad Division of South Central Railway.
Previously, 'Kavach 3.2' was operational here, and it has now been upgraded to this newer version. According to the Railways, this new version was developed following experience gained from deploying 'Kavach 3.2' across 1,465 route kilometers in the South Central Railway zone. The objective is to make the train safety system more precise, reliable, and modern.
What has changed in 'Kavach 4.0' to further strengthen train safety?
'Kavach' is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system in India. Its function is to assist the loco pilot by monitoring train speed and signals. If the train exceeds the prescribed speed limit or is at risk of passing red signal, the system can automatically apply the brakes when necessary. The new version focuses on enhancing the precision of this mechanism.
Train location tracking is now more precise than before
A major upgrade in 'Kavach 4.0' relates to train location tracking. The system is now capable of identifying the train's position with greater accuracy than before. This facilitates a better understanding of the train's actual location near signals, stations, or yards. Accurate location data allows for more precise warning and braking processes.
Improved signal information for large stations and yards
Large railway yards feature multiple signals and tracks, creating a complex operational environment. 'Kavach 4.0' improves signal information handling for such areas. Additionally, communication systems between stations have been strengthened using Optical Fiber Cables (OFC) to ensure the rapid transmission of critical information.
Kavach to operate by integrating directly with existing interlocking systems
Kavach 4.0 can be directly integrated with the railways' existing electronic interlocking systems. The interlocking system controls signals and track points; seamless coordination with it allows Kavach to easily access information regarding the signaling setup. According to the railways, the system assists loco pilots by providing crucial information inside the cab, even during adverse weather conditions such as fog.
Preparations underway to deploy Kavach 4.0 across entire railway network
Kavach 4.0 requires SIL-4 (Safety Integrity Level-4) certification, which is considered the highest level of safety, given that the system is directly linked to passenger safety. Following its initial deployment on the Malkajgiri-Kamareddy section, the railways plan to implement this upgraded system on a much larger scale. In other words, the rollout of Kavach 4.0 is not limited to a single section; preparations are in place to extend it across the vast Indian Railways network.
