Sugam Bus Service to Launch in Madhya Pradesh on Sept 25, Says CM Mohan Yadav: What Will Change for Passengers?
The Madhya Pradesh government will launch the 'Chief Minister's Sugam Transport Bus Service' across the state on September 25, providing a new public transport system for residents, tourists, and pilgrims. The primary objective is to make bus travel safe, reliable, affordable, and easily accessible.
This service is being designed for a state that boasts a road network of approximately 5 lakh kilometers and the capacity to operate over 15,000 buses. Route surveys across all 55 districts have already been completed. Based on travel requirements, there is a proposal to develop approximately 150 city routes, 450 inter-city routes, and 436 inter-state routes.
Buses will be equipped with GPS, CCTV cameras, panic buttons
One of the most significant changes for passengers will be improved information and monitoring. Buses will be equipped with GPS, CCTV cameras, and panic buttons, while real-time monitoring will allow for the tracking of bus movements. Plans are also in place for digital ticketing and passenger information systems.
The government states that the aim is to provide the "right bus, right route, and right time." This initiative is expected to particularly benefit passengers in small towns and rural areas, where bus services are often limited or irregular.
Connecting villages to cities
The service will also focus on connecting villages to cities and improving travel between districts and states. The program proposes the construction of modern bus stands, terminals, depots, and bus stops.
Agreement between MPYPIL and Rapido
Another key change will be ensuring easy access to buses from homes and other transport hubs. An agreement between Madhya Pradesh Passenger Transport and Infrastructure Limited (MPYPIL) and Rapido will initially be implemented as a pilot project in Bhopal and Indore.
This initiative will connect bus stands, bus stops, and metro stations with two-wheeler services, helping passengers complete the first and last legs of their journeys.
More Electric and Technology-Driven Buses
The government plans to prioritize electric and CNG buses, with the primary objective of reducing pollution and making public transport eco-friendly. The use of electric buses is expected to increase as the service expands.
This system will primarily operate under a public-private partnership model, bringing private bus operators into a structured framework. This is expected to create new opportunities for transport operators and generate employment for the youth.
Mobility to be enhanced in areas that lack connectivity
The state has also set a target to connect 75% of its development blocks with transport services by 2030. The government anticipates that the revived bus network will improve daily commuting, boost tourism and pilgrimage travel, and enhance mobility in areas that have historically lacked connectivity.
Discussions regarding the operational, financial, and technological framework of this service are currently underway at the two-day 'Passenger Transport Vision Summit-2026' in Indore. More than 2,000 delegates and 100 industry experts are participating in the event.
The government has hailed September 25 as the beginning of a long-term transformation in Madhya Pradesh's public transport sector, placing passenger safety, connectivity, technology, and clean mobility at the core of the new system.
