Delhi Air Pollution: Delhi records AQI of 382 ahead of Diwali: GRAP-III measures implemented, what IMD has predicted?
Air pollution in Delhi continues to rise. On Saturday, an AQI of 380 was recorded in the vicinity of India Gate. Due to the deteriorating air quality, GRAP-III measures have been implemented in Delhi-NCR. For classes up to grade 5, schooling will be conducted in a ‘hybrid mode’ (both online and offline).
In view of the deteriorating air quality in Delhi, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has invoked Stage-III of the 'Graded Response Action Plan' (GRAP) across the entire National Capital Region (NCR).
During a meeting held on November 6, a sub-committee of the CAQM reviewed pollution levels and weather forecasts. The average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 382, which falls under the 'Very Poor' category. Due to adverse weather conditions, pollutants are unable to disperse.
Furthermore, forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) indicate that air quality could deteriorate further, potentially reaching the 'Severe' category.
Directives to Agencies for Implementing Restrictions
Pollution Control Boards of the NCR states and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) have been directed to strictly enforce these measures. Additionally, various government agencies have been instructed to take immediate steps to prevent any further degradation of air quality.
The Sub-Committee has urged citizens to adhere to the following specific steps listed in Citizen Charter of Stage-III along with Stage-I and Stage-II of GRAP and assist in effective implementation of the under:
Walk or use cycles for small distances. Choose a cleaner transport mode to commute.
Combine short journeys and reduce trips. Postpone private gatherings that increase traffic and outdoor exposure.
Do not use coal and wood for heating purpose.
House owners may also provide electric heaters to security/other staff employed by them to avoid open burning of biomass / wood / MSW.
Follow hybrid mode for primary schools and work-from-home when instructed.
