Rawat still stands with object to ripped jeans

After getting into the controversy, Rawat still stands his object to ripped jeans. When asked to explain after his 'ripped jeans comment sparked outrage, newly-elected Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat said he would stick with his stand. According to sources, Rawat said that he does not have a problem with women wearing jeans but object to those wearing ripped jeans.

Rawat's wife, Rashmi Tyagi, defended her husband by stating that topic of ripped jeans blown out of context and wrongly interpreted.

This is not the first time when a political leader commenting on women's wearing. Before this, Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the right-wing Hindu Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of BJP said rapes were an urban crime influenced by westernisation that does not occur in rural India, where traditional values are upheld.

In 2013, Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi said that scantily dressed women caught male attention and rape cases were on the rise because of "women wearing less clothes".

BJP leader, Manohar Lal Khattar, the Chief Minister of Haryana, had said. “Why don't they just walk around naked if they want freedom?” Freedom has to be limited. According to our tradition, Girls are expected to dress decently in our country. Women should dress in a way that inspires others to value them. Unfortunately, women are dressing provocatively, which is causing social deviation."
