Gujarat Bridge Collapse: There Was No Crowd Control At Bridge

Morbi (Gujarat): Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Morbi, Gujarat on Tuesday. Referring to the tragedy at an event in Gujarat this morning, Modi said rarely had he felt such pain.

No crowd control: Though tickets were sold, there was no apparent crowd control, either by the private company or by the administration. There was apparently no cap on the number of people on the suspension bridge although it could take the weight of only about 125 people. There were about four times as many people on the bridge than its carrying capacity.

Toll rose to 134: The death toll in Morbi suspension bridge collapse rose to 134 on Monday and the rescue operation was still underway. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi remained in Morbi during the night to supervise the rescue operation being conducted by several agencies.

"The death toll in the bridge collapse incident has gone up to 134," Rajkot Range Inspector General Ashok Yadav told.

There were about 500 people on the "hanging bridge" when the cables snapped on Sunday evening. The crowd included women performing Chhath puja rituals, and children.
