Mobile phone makers will stop manufacturing 4G smartphones, shift to 5G technology


Mobile phone manufacturing companies would gradually discontinue the production of 4G phones priced Rs. 10,000 and above and shift to 5G technology.

Representatives of mobile companies have met top government officials on Wednesday and assured that they would shift to 5G technology.

Top officials of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) held a meeting with the mobile operators and smartphone makers and asked them to tune in their 5G services with 5G smartphone within three months timeframe. 

Telecom operators including executives of companies like Apple, Samsung also attended the meeting. These updates are being done to provide smooth 5G network.

Smartphone makers will gradually shift to 5G phone priced on or above Rs. 10,000 category.

5G has started in these cities: Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio started providing 5G service in some cities of the country from October 1. Airtel started service in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Siliguri, Nagpur and Varanasi. At the same time, Jio started service in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi.
