Voting For Congress President Post Today: Does Shahsi Tharoor Stands A Chance Before Mallikarjun Kharge?

New Delhi: Voting for the post of Congress President is being held on Monday after 24 years. Senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge is considered the front runner in this election. He is pitted against Shashi Tharoor, who joined the Congress in 2008.

About 9,800 voters will cast their vote for Shashi Tharoor and Mallikarjun Kharge in the voting going to be held in 68 booths across 40 centers across the country on Monday.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, former PM Dr Manmohan Singh and party's general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are likely to cast their votes at AICC headquarters, Delhi, while Rahul Gandhi will be voting in the party's presidential election at a campsite of Bharat Jodo Yatra in the Ballari district of Karnataka along with around 40 Bharat yatris who are PCC delegates.

The process of voting will run from 10 am to 4 pm. The results will be announced on Wednesday, October 19 at the party headquarters at Akbar Road, Delhi.

Mallikarjun Kharge is trusted lieutenant of Gandhi family: Eighty-year-old Kharge enjoys trust of the Gandhi family and many people believe that Kharge is the Gandhi family's candidate for the post of president.

Kharge's journey from being an ordinary party worker of Karnataka's Kalaburagi district to the race for the post of president has been full of ups and downs.

Congress wants to give message: Analysts believe that by making South's Dalit leader Mallikarjun Kharge a contender for the president's post, the Congress also wants to send a message to the workers that even an ordinary worker can reach the post of president on the strength of the ability in the party.

Won the election of MLA for nine consecutive terms: Kharge, who started his political career in 1972, won the election of MLA for nine consecutive terms from Gurmitkal seat in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka. Mallikarjun Kharge has said that if he becomes the president, he will have no hesitation in taking the advice and support of the Gandhi family in running the party.

How much challenge will Shashi Tharoor be able to give? Tharoor may not be able to defeat Gandhi family's trusted aide Mallikarjun Kharge in the election for the post of President, but political analysts agree that he is trying to put himself in the front line of Congress leaders.

Apart from being the leader of the Congress party, Shashi Tharoor, 66, has a distinct identity of his own. He has also been a skilled diplomat and successful writer.

Shashi Tharoor was part of Congress's G-23.

Tharoor had also joined Bharat Jodo Yatra: In September, when Rahul Gandhi started the Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari, he was there too. After this he met Sonia Gandhi and expressed his desire for the candidature of the President.

Not getting support from party leaders: Tharoor, who is challenging Kharge, has said that he is not getting the desired support from party leaders.

Tharoor, who has won three consecutive Lok Sabha elections from Thiruvananthapuram seat in Kerala, is not getting enough support in the party's Kerala unit itself.

The Kerala unit of Congress had passed a resolution saying that it would support only the candidate who would have the support of the party high command.
