Will the world get a cancer vaccine? What the top scientists say

New Delhi: The world will get a cancer vaccine before 2030. Uğur Şahin, German oncologist and immunologist, said that a cure for cancer or a treatment to change the lives of cancer patients will be a reality soon.

Sahin is the CEO and co-founder of BioNTech, which developed one of the major vaccines against COVID-19. He said the cancer vaccine will be based on the successes achieved by scientists during the development of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Now, within just eight years, a cancer vaccine could be widely available, he said. We are confident that the cancer vaccine will definitely come to the world before 2030. "Our goal at the moment is to see if we can give personalized vaccines to patients immediately after surgery," he said.

Professors Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci are exploring new technology involving messenger RNA (mRNA), to treat cancer.

When the Covid pandemic struck they partnered with Pfizer to use the same approach to develop a Covid vaccine.

Now the doctors are hopeful it could lead to new treatments for melanoma, bowel cancer and other tumour types.

BioNTech has several trials in progress, including one where patients are given a personalised vaccine, to prompt their immune system to attack their disease.
