Uttarakhand Accident: 12 Passengers Die As SUV Plunges Into Gorge In Chamoli

Chamoli (Uttarakhand): An SUV fell into an about 700 meters deep gorge at village Palla Jakhol on Dumak road in Uttarakhand's Chamoli on Friday afternoon. 12 people died in the accident, while 4 were injured. The dead include 10 men and 2 women. There were 21 people in the SUV. Two or three people were sitting on the roof of the SUV. They have suffered serious injuries. The SUV was going from Joshimath in Uttarakhand towards Palla Jakhula village.  
Financial assistance announced: Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed grief over this accident. He has announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.
SUV was attempting to climb a hill: As soon as the information about the accident was received, the local police and fire brigade team reached the spot and started the rescue. Locals say that the SUV was attempting to climb a hill near Palla village, but the driver lost control and the SUV fell into a gorge. Where the accident took place, there is a rain drain due to which the road is unpaved and stony.
Vehicles are not allowed to ply on the road where accident occurred: ARTO told that all the papers of the vehicle have been found correct, but the vehicles are not allowed to ply on the road where the accident happened. The SUV had passed through the check post before the accident, but no one stopped it here.
A team of SDRF had been sent from Post Pandukeshwar. Uttarakhand CM PS Dhami spoke to DM Chamoli on phone and instructed him to conduct relief & rescue work at a fast pace. DM Himanshu Khurana, SP Pramendra Dobal along with SDRF, NDRF, police & administration teams are engaged in rescue.
