Joshimath Chamoli Landslide: Winter Tourism Hit In Uttarakhand's Joshimath, Auli; People Canceling Hotel Bookings


Joshimath (Uttarakhand): Landslides and cracks in houses in Joshimath, Uttarakhad are also affecting tourism and winter travel. Auli and Joshimath used to attract around 2,000 tourists daily during winters, but the number of tourists has come down by 30 percent due to the threat of landslides.

Tourists are also canceling advance bookings in hotels. The closure of the ropeway in Auli till further orders has also affected the number of tourists. The 45 tourists who had made advance bookings to the tourism department had to reach Joshimath in their vehicles due to the closure of the ropeway.

Auli is India's premier ski resort destination

The small yet picture-perfect town of Auli is India's premier ski resort destination. Originally developed as a paramilitary base, Auli's skiing slopes are popular among tourists and professionals alike. In winter, Auli hosts several snow adventure events.

Standing at around 2,800 m, and surrounded by acres of oak and coniferous forests, Auli offers panoramic views of some of India's highest peaks, including the second-highest in the country, Nanda Devi (7,816m). Besides Auli, Uttarakhand has several other skiing destinations, like Dayara Bugyal, Munsiyari and Mundali.

Ropeway manager Dinesh Bhatt says that in view of security, the operation of the ropeway has been stopped in compliance with the orders of the administration.

Tourists are afraid to stay in Joshimath

Although these days more than two thousand tourists and pilgrims are reaching Auli every day, but they are afraid to stop at Joshimath. 

Although there is no risk of landslides in Auli, but there are limited resources to stay there, so tourists visiting Auli have to go to Joshimath base camp to stay. Here, advance booking of hoteliers is also getting canceled due to landslide.
