Bhubaneshwar: Odisha's health and family welfare minister Naba Kishore Das was shot at in Jharsuguda district on Sunday. His condition is said to be very critical. An ASI fired on him from point blank range in Brajrajnagar. He suffered 4-5 bullets in the chest. The accused ASI has been caught. The motive behind the attack was not immediately clear.
The attacker was in police uniform so no one suspected him. After the firing, the accused started running. Initially people thought that he was running to nab the attacker. But later it came to light that he himself was the attacker.
The police said that Naba Das had gone to Brajrajnagar to attend a programme. An ASI Gopaldas attacked Naba Das as soon as he got down from the car. The minister was on his way to attend a program at Gandhi Chowk in the town.
"Assistant Sub-inspector of Police (ASI) Gopal Das opened fire at the minister. The minister is injured and rushed to hospital," Brajrajnagar SDPO Gupteswar Bhoi said.
According to latest information, the minister was being air lifted to Bhubaneshwar for treatment.
Was elected MLA for third time in a row from Jharsaguda seat: Naba Das contested for the first time in 2004 on a Congress ticket from the Jharsuguda seat in Odisha. He lost the election for the first time. After this, again in 2009, he contested on Congress ticket and won. Won from Congress in 2014 also. In the year 2019 elections, he was elected MLA from this seat for the third time in a row. Naba Kishore Das is considered an influential leader in the field.
