Melborne: Tennis star Sania Mirza's dream of winning the last Grand Slam final was shattered. In the Australian Open Mixed Doubles final, the pair of Sania (36) and Rohan Bopanna (42) lost to the Brazilian pair of Luisa Stefani and Rafael Mataos in the final at Rod Laver Arena.
After the final match, Sania broke down in tears when she was called for a speech at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. She said – these are tears of joy. Career started in Melbourne 18 years ago, there can't be a better place than Melbourne to end it. Thank you all for making me feel at home here.
Sania Mirza has already announced her retirement. At the start of the year, she had said that the WTA 1000 event in Dubai starting February 19 would be her last tournament. After that she will retire.
'Bopanna was my first mixed doubles partner at age of 14'
Sania Mirza also thanked fellow player Rohan Bopanna. She said that at the age of 14, her first mixed doubles partner was Bopanna.
Bopanna said to Sania – You have inspired the people of the country and the world for so many years with your game. Thank you for this.
Both their families and children were also present during the final. However, Sania's husband and Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik was present.
Coming into her final Major tournament, Sania had three women's doubles and as many mixed doubles trophies in her cabinet. The 42-year-old Bopanna has one French Open mixed doubles title to his credit.
