The sanctioned strength of the judges in the Supreme Court is 34 including the CJI. Presently there are 27 judges in the top court. This number will increase to 32 after the five judges take oath.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended 5 names to the government on 13 December.

These included Justice Pankaj Mithal Chief Justice Rajasthan HC, Justice Sanjay Karol Chief Justice Patna HC, Justice PV Sanjay Kumar Chief Justice Manipur HC, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah of Patna High Court and Justice Manoj Mishra of Allahabad HC.

Hearing held on contempt petition

Advocates Association Bangalore had filed a contempt petition in this matter. There was a hearing on this on Friday. The court expressed displeasure over the delay in approving the recommendations for transfer of High Court judges and appointment in the Supreme Court.

The court told the government that this is a very serious matter. Don't force us to take such a stand that will cause trouble. The next hearing of the case will be on February 13.
