Border-Gavaskar Trophy: We Will Miss Rishabh Pant, Says Rohit Sharma

Nagpur: Team India captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday admitted that he will miss talented wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy though they have players to fill in for Pant.

"We will miss Rishabh Pant, but we have the players to play that role. We have spoken to the players about their plans and hopefully we can implement them from tomorrow," Rohit said speaking to reporters on the eve of the first Test.

Pant has been highest run-scorer for India

Significantly, Pant has been the highest run-scorer for India in Test cricket from 2020 to 2022. He has scored 1517 runs in 22 matches played during this period at an average of 43.34.

Pant has bailed India out of trouble several times mainly with his match-winning innings. The last time India toured Australia, the visiting team could win only on the basis of Pant's unbeaten 89 runs.

'Selection will be difficult'

Rohit talked about filling Pant's place in the XI, though he remained tight-lipped on the question of player selection.

When Rohit was asked about the XI, he said, "Selection will be difficult. All the players are performing well. We will pick the XI after assessing the situation going into every match. The players know that and we have discussed this with players."

Rohit expects an evenly contested series

Rohit Sharma said he faces his biggest test when his side comes up against a determined Australia in the Border-Gavaskar series, which starts on Thursday.

Rohit said that he expected an evenly contested series. “We have four solid test matches to play in the BGT and we would want to win the series. It is going to be a challenging series and we have to be up for it. Preparation is the key. If you prepare well, you get results.”
