MCD Mayor Election: Will Delhi See Its New Mayor Today?

New Delhi: Today on Monday the councilors will have a chance to elect Delhi Mayor in the MCD Mayor Election. The mayoral elections failed twice in Delhi.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has a majority in the MCD, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee members.

The councilors of both the parties clashed on the last two occasions. Now it has become a battle of the prestige. While AAP with 135 corporators is claiming victory on all the posts, BJP has also not given up its claim.

Chances of an uproar once again

However, there are chances of an uproar once again. On both the previous occasions, there was an uproar over the Alderman and till now the position on this issue remains the same. It is not yet clear whether the 10 councilors (aldermen) nominated by the LG will take part in the voting.

BJP will not allow elections to be held: Sisodia

Meanwhile, Delhi's Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has said that the BJP will not allow elections to be held once again.

He tweeted on Monday, 'BJP has instructed its councilors not to allow the mayoral election to be held in the MCD meeting again today. BJP councilors have been told to create ruckus on some pretext as soon as the house starts. The Presiding Officer will again adjourn the House sine die like last time. LG will again give the date after 20 days.'

Kejriwal will be responsible if there is an uproar: BJP

At the same time, BJP's working state president Virendra Sachdeva has also said that Kejriwal will be responsible if there is an uproar. He tweeted, 'Manish Sisodia your story is clear - Delhiites are understanding your restlessness. The Aam Aadmi Party does not believe in its majority. AAP has instructed its councilors to get the House adjourned by creating ruckus on any small matter. If the House is adjourned today, then Arvind Kejriwal will be responsible for it.'

Do not allow Aldermen to vote: AAP

Earlier on Sunday, all the 135 councilors of  AAP wrote a letter to the presiding officer asking him to stop the Alderman from voting. He alleged that the BJP wanted to influence the elections. They said that the nominated councilors do not have the right to participate in the voting process. It was said in the letter that it is the responsibility of the pro tem speaker to follow the rules.

In fact, the Aam Aadmi Party is apprehensive that nominated councilors may also be given a chance to participate in voting and this may strengthen the BJP's equation.

Shaili Oberoi is AAP's Mayoral candidate

AAP has fielded corporator Shaili Oberoi from East Patel Nagar as its candidate for the post of mayor, while Aale Mohammad Iqbal, who won from Chandni Mahal, has been nominated for the post of deputy mayor.

Rekha Gupta is BJP candidate

The BJP has fielded Mahila Morcha vice-president and three-time corporator Rekha Gupta for the post of mayor. There will also be an interesting contest between the two parties for the Standing Committee, which is also known as the power center of the MCD.
