MCD Standing Committee Election: AAP, BJP Councilors Come To Blows Again, Many Injured

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party and BJP councilors once again came to blows on Friday in the election of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). 

A vote was declared invalid by the mayor during the counting. After this the mayor ordered a recount. After this order, the ruckus started. 

There was fierce kicking and punching between the councilors. Many councilors were injured in the fight. The condition of a councilor worsened.

Sources said three members each from both the parties won the standing committee elections. Mayor Shelly Oberoi refused to sign the list of these elected members. She ordered recounting of one vote as invalid. 

The corporation secretary refused to sign the recounting decision. There was a heated conversation between the mayor and the corporation secretary on this.

During the tussle between the two, the BJP councilors demanded to validate the invalid vote, then the Mayor said that she cannot validate the invalid vote. 

Election will be held on Feb 27: Mayor

On this the BJP councilors started raising slogans by climbing on the tables. When the AAP councilors went ahead to stop them, a fight started between the councilors of both the parties. After the uproar, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said – Now the election will be held on February 27.

Earlier, BJP councillor Sharad Kapoor on Friday moved the Delhi High Court, alleging that Mayor Shelly Oberoi did not stick to to the rules of not using mobile phones and pens during voting to elect the MCD Standing Committee members on Wednesday.

Kapoor, in his petition, has said that the Mayor "defied every constitutional and statutory norm" and "betrayed the mandate of the Constitution by allowing mobile phones and pens in the election proceedings".
