Strong Earthquake Jolts Tajikistan-Afghanistan Border; Tremors Felt In China, Pakistan

Earthquake tremors were felt in Afghanistan and Tajikistan on Thursday. The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 7.3 on the Richter scale.

According to reports, the effect of the earthquake has been felt in the adjoining areas of China and in Pakistan. According to the US Geological Survey, earthquake struck Tajikistan at 7:37 am local time. Its center is said to be 265 km away from Fayzabad, Afghanistan in the Gorno-Badakhshan province in Tajikistan on the Afghan-China border.

Tremors also felt in Baluchistan

Earthquake tremors have also been felt in some parts of Baluchistan. There was an earthquake in Pakistan about three weeks back as well and that too was of similar intensity.

Just a week before the devastating earthquake on the Turkey-Syria border i.e. on January 29, there was a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Pakistan. The epicenter of that earthquake was also Tajikistan.

Tremors felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi

Strong tremors of the earthquake were felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other parts of the country. But there was no news of any casualty or damage to property. In the year 2005, the most devastating earthquake ever occurred in Pakistan. More than 74,000 people died in that earthquake.

The place where the earthquake struck in Tajikistan is a completely deserted area with very less population. The area is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as landslides, avalanches, and heavy snowfalls.

Experts have cautioned about the potential catastrophic consequences if the natural dam located deep in the Pamir Mountains is breached.

This follows recent destructive earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.  Turkey and Syria are still reeling from the aftermath of a massive earthquake that killed over 47,000 people and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes.
