Indore Accident: 13 Die As People Fall Into Stepwell During Havan On Ram Navami

Indore: Thirteen people, most of them women, were killed when the roof of the stepwell caved in on Ram Navami at Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Temple in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. More than 30 people fell in the 40 feet deep stepwell. 

A total of 11 bodies were pulled out from the stepwell. The police pulled out 19 people with the help of ropes and admitted them to the hospital, where two people died. There is four to five feet of water in the stepwell. Municipal Corporation removed water with the help of three pumps. 

After this the rescue started again. It is suspected that some people are still inside the stepwell. NDRF team has also reached the spot.

Devotees were sitting on terrace of stepwell

The accident happened during the Havan at the temple in Sneh Nagar, Sapna Sangeeta Road. According to eyewitnesses, people were sitting on the terrace of the stepwell. Its roof broke under the weight and people fell down. This temple is about 60 years old. A child who came to visit the temple is still missing. The collector has said to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

Compensation to the kin of deceased and those injured

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand each to the injured. He said that the government will provide treatment to the injured.
Home Minister Narottam Mishra told that out of 11 dead bodies removed from the stepwell, 10 are of women. Till now we have lost 13 people in the accident. On the spot, the administration is engaged in rescue work. An inquiry into the accident has also been ordered. Those who have been rescued are being treated.

There were children and women among those who fell. This temple is about 60 years old. There was a program of Kanya Pujan, so there was a lot of crowd in the temple.

People were sitting on the side of stepwell

Eyewitnesses told that Havan was going on in the temple. During this, there was a lot of crowd on the stepwell part. Most of them were women and children, who were sitting on the side of the stepwell to watch the havan going on.

It is being told that construction and digging work is going on in the temple premises. Due to the construction work in the temple premises, there is a possibility of collapse of the floor due to sinking of the wall of the well. Apart from this, some residents also told about the well being hollow due to rats.

Deceased identified

According to official information, the dead included Laxmi Patel (70) resident of Patel Nagar, Indrakumar Harwani (53) resident of Sadhu Vaswani Nagar, Bharti Kukreja (58) resident of C2 Sadhu Vaswani Nagar, Jaywanti Khubchandani (84) resident of A Sneh Nagar, Daksha Patel ( 6) resident of Patel Nagar, Madhu Bhammani (48) 41 Sarvodaya Nagar, Manisha Motwani (48) resident of Sadhu Vaswani Nagar Sindhi Colony, Ganga Patel (32) resident of Patel Nagar, Kanak Patel (32) resident of Patel Nagar, Pushpa Patel (49) resident of Patel Nagar and Bhumika Khanchandani (31) resident Patel Nagar.

PM expresses pain

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed pain over the mishap in Indore. Modi has spoken to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and took an update on the situation.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said: "Extremely pained by the mishap in Indore. Spoke to CM @ChouhanShivraj Ji and took an update on the situation. The State Government is spearheading rescue and relief work at a quick pace. My prayers with all those affected and their families.
