Maharashtra By-election Result 2023: Mixed Fortunes For BJP

Mumbai: The poll outcome on two seats of Maharashtra has brought nixed fortunes for BJP. By-polls were held on Kasba and Chinchwad seats here. The BJP has suffered a major setback in the Kasba assembly by-election.

The party has not been able to save its 28-year-old bastion here. The BJP was holding this seat since 1995. But Ravindra Dhangekar of Congress has won by more than 10,000 votes.

Uddhav Thackeray camp had won the first by-election in Andheri East after Eknath Shinde became the CM. Now losing the traditional seat in the second by-election after Shinde became CM is not a good sign for BJP.

According to political observers, the Maha Vikas Aghadi showed strong solidarity against the Shinde-Fadnavis camp. Some experts also say that there is resentment among the old Shiv Sena workers and because of this it is possible for them to vote against the Shinde-BJP alliance.

Maharashtra has 48 Lok Sabha seats and next year, after the Lok Sabha, assembly elections will also be held there. In such a situation, the challenge will be bigger for Eknath Shinde and BJP.

Success for BJP in Chinchwad

But In the by-poll to Chinchwad (Pune), BJP's Ashwini Jagtap is leading by 27,000 votes over nearest rival Nana Kate of NCP while Independent candidate Rahul Kalate trails far behind. In Chinchwad, the significant difference in votes between the BJP and the other candidates highlights the success of their campaigning and policies.

The performance of Independent candidate Rahul Kalate, meanwhile, shows that while rebels can have an impact in elections, they may find it challenging to gain significant support against established parties.

Winning lead for Cong candidate in W Bengal

In the Sagardighi (Murshidabad) assembly by-election in West Bengal, the Congress candidate has made a winning lead. Baron Biswas of Congress is ahead of Debasish Banerjee of TMC by more than 23 thousand votes.

On the other hand, BJP's Dilip Saha is at number three here and he is behind the Congress candidate by about 60 thousand votes. Panchayat elections are to be held in West Bengal this year and Lok Sabha elections are also due next year.
