Rahul Gandhi Gets 2 Year Jail In Defamation Case; Also Granted Bail By Surat Court

Surat: The Surat court on Thursday convicted Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case related to the statement 'Why all thieves have the surname Modi...'.

The court also imposed a sentence of 2 years and a fine of 15 thousand on him. After some time, the same court also granted him bail for 30 days. Rahul remained present in the court during the hearing.

Rahul presented his side in the court. According to his lawyer, 'Rahul said that my intention was not wrong while giving the statement. I had raised my voice against corruption.'

On the other hand, MLA and petitioner Purnesh Modi and his supporters raised slogans of Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Jai Shri Ram outside the court.

Our arguments were not considered: Rahul's lawyer

On the other hand defence lawyer Kirit Panwala, representing Rahul Gandhi, said that we are not satisfied with the verdict passed by the court as some of our arguments were not considered. The issues we raised were, there is no community by the name of Modi and even the complainant is not a Modi as his earlier surname was Bhootwala and later changed to Modi.

Panwala said we will take up our issues to higher courts in coming days.

Commented on Modi surname during LS elections

During the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, Rahul Gandhi had commented on the surname Modi in a meeting. Regarding which BJP MLA from Surat Purnesh Modi had filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi in Surat court.

Rahul Gandhi had said that he did not remember saying this in the election rally. Now in this case Rahul Gandhi has been given bail as soon as the sentence of two years was announced. In this case, he has also been given 30 days to appeal against the sentence.
