Patna: At least 16 people died and 48 were hospitalized in Motihari, East Champaran in Bihar after consuming spurious liquor. The deaths were reported from Lakshmipur, Paharpur, and Harsiddhi blocks of Motihari in East Champaran district, around 150 kilometers northwest of the capital Patna.
The condition of many is critical. All are undergoing treatment in different hospitals of Motihari and Muzaffarpur.
Police said on Saturday that seven people have been arrested in a special drive and necessary legal actions are being taken
Residents of 6 villages consumed liquor
People of 6 villages of the district had consumed liquor at different places on Thursday. Everyone's health started deteriorating since night. The next day deaths started happening one by one. Till Saturday, 16 people died.
A special team from Patna is going to Motihari to investigate the matter. The team includes 5 police officers, including 2 DSP and 3 Inspectors.
The deceased include Ashok Paswan, Chhotu Paswan - residents of Turkauliya, Tuntun Singh, Bhutan Manjhi, Jata Ram and Dhrup Paswan - residents of Paharpur block of East Champaran.
Liquor party was organised
Vinod Paswan, who attended the liquor party, told that Jata Ram had called all of us to Balganga to harvest wheat. After working there, everyone consumed alcohol together, then went home from there. As the night passed, everyone's condition started deteriorating. Jata Ram, Dhrup Paswan, Ashok Paswan and Chhotu died.
On this incident, CM Nitish Kumar said – The incident is sad. People should not do wrong things. It is told again and again.
7 bodies cremated without autopsy
The deaths began on Friday. By evening 8 people lost their lives. This figure increased to 16 on Saturday morning. The family members cremated 7 bodies without postmortem.
Father and son died within 4 hours in Math Lohiyar. Naval Das died first, followed by son Parmendra Das. The family cremated them.
Naval's daughter-in-law's condition is critical. The doctor who treated her told that she had diarrhea. Due to this, the administration is telling everyone in the family had diarrhoea.
