Patna: Gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan Singh was released from Bihar's Saharsa jail early Thursday morning.
The Bihar government recently amended the prison rules paving the way for the release of 27 convicts including Singh. He was serving a life sentence in the 1994 murder of then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah.
After the Bihar government amended the rules of the jail manual, an official notification stated that 27 prisoners who have served 14 years or 20 years in jail have been ordered to be released.
Posters welcoming the former MP Anand Mohan were put up at Veer Kunwar Singh Chowk in the district.
Govt has set a wrong example: DM's daughter
DM G Krishnaiah's daughter and wife said the decision is wrong. Krishnaiah's daughter Padma has expressed displeasure over the release of Anand Mohan. She said in Hyderabad that Bihar government should reconsider this decision. The government has set a wrong example. This is not just injustice to a family, but injustice to the country. Padma also said she would appeal against the release.
G Krishnaiah's wife said that this is being done for vote bank politics. The convict was earlier sentenced to death, then it was commuted to life imprisonment. Now the government is getting him released. This is not correct at all.
PIL filed, IAS Assn also protests
Dalit organization Bhim Army Bharat Ekta Mission has filed a PIL in the Patna High Court. The organization said that the government has done a wrong thing by changing the law to save the criminals.
The IAS Association has also protested against the release of Anand. The association says that they will go to court against it.
The IAS Association of Andhra Pradesh has appealed to the Bihar government to reconsider its decision.
Anand Mohan was earlier on parole of 15 days to attend the engagement ceremony of his MLA son Chetan Anand. He had returned to Saharsa jail on April 26 following the end of his parole period.
Earlier on Wednesday, the state prisons department had released nearly 14 convicts from various jails of the state. Singh was among eight others who could not be released yesterday.
May start his political career afresh
Anand Mohan is likely to start his political career afresh. He has also indicated to contest the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. However, Anand Mohan has not yet told which party he will join after coming out of jail. The doors of RJD and JDU as well as other parties are open for him.
Anand Mohan Singh, who has been an MP from Sheohar, has dominance in his area. His son Chetan Anand is currently RJD MLA from Sheohar. Anand Mohan's wife Lovely Anand is also involved in RJD
What Tejashwi said on release?
Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav refused to comment on Anand Mohan's release. Tejashwi said that we have nothing to say.
However, RJD state spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari has justified the decision to release Anand Mohan. Talking to the media, Mr. Tiwari said that Anand Mohan has served the entire sentence following all the rules, regulations and laws. He wrote the book while in jail and presented the ideal. So he was released.
