5 Army Personnel Martyred In Encounter in J&K's Rajouri


Rajouri: Five army personnel have been martyred in an ongoing encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri since Friday morning. Two jawans were martyred in the encounter in the morning, while three more injured jawans succumbed in the afternoon. In this way the number of martyrs became 5. A jawan is injured.


The encounter started at 7.30 am on Friday and has been going on for about 9 hours. According to the information received from the army, firing is going on from both sides. Meanwhile, army soldiers were martyred in the blast of terrorists. It has also been learned from the sources that the army has surrounded two to three terrorists. They are said to be the same terrorists who were involved in the attack on the army truck in Poonch.


According to a statement from the Army's Northern Command, personnel have been carrying out intensive intelligence-based operations to flush out a group of terrorists involved in an ambush on an Army truck in the Tota Gali area of Bhata Dhurian in Jammu region last month. 


A joint operation was launched on May 3 on specific information regarding the presence of terrorists in the Kandi Forest in the Rajouri Sector. 


Around 7.30 am on Friday, a search team established contact with a group of terrorists well entrenched in a cave. The area is thickly forested with rocky and steep cliffs.


In retaliation, The terrorists triggered an explosive device. The Army team has suffered two fatal casualties with injuries to four more soldiers, including an officer, the statement said.


There were reports that there could be around five deaths, besides injuries to a Major-rank officer.


Additional teams rushed to site of encounter


The statement said additional teams from the vicinity have been rushed to the site of the encounter and the injured personnel have been shifted to Command Hospital at Udhampur.


As per initial reports, a group of terrorists are trapped in the area, it said, adding there is a likelihood of casualties in the terrorist group and the operation is in progress.'


Meanwhile, the mobile internet facilities in the Rajouri area have been suspended, officials said.
