Monsoon 2023: Country Likely To Receive Below Normal Rainfall In June; Pre-Monsoon Showers To Lash Kerala

New Delhi: The country is likely to receive below normal rainfall in June, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said while forecasting normal monsoon for the entire season.

IMD Environment Monitoring and Research Center (EMRC) chief D Sivananda Pai said, "Below normal rainfall in month of June is expected over most parts of the country except some areas of south peninsular India, northwest India, extreme north India and some isolated pockets of northeast India, where above normal rainfall is expected."

Monsoon is expected to be normal this season

The southwest monsoon is expected to be normal this season despite the onset of El Nino, which is caused due to warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, he said. Pai said the seasonal rainfall over the monsoon core zone consisting of most of the rain-fed agriculture areas in the country is most likely to be normal -- 94 to 106 per cent of the long period average.

Pre-monsoon showers in Kerala

Meanwhile Skymet ether said strong pre-monsoon showers are likely over most parts of Kerala in the remaining days of May. Weather activity has remained subdued this pre-monsoon season and the state escaped the fury of heavy weather activity so far, more so during the 2nd  half of May.  Irrespective of the date of arrival of the monsoon, rainfall over the state from 01st June onward will be counted against the seasonal rainfall.

Pre Monsoon thundershowers are generally hefty all along the coastline of the state and penetrate deep inland as well. However, the pre-monsoon rains did not pick up this season and mostly remained below average.

But the remaining days look promising and may achieve normal rainfall on a daily basis.  Kerala has a total deficit of 25% rainfall between 01st March and 25th May 2023. Last year in May, the state received very heavy rainfall of 426.2mm against the normal of 219.5mm, a huge surplus of 95%.
