What Is So Unique About Bhadohi UP's Velvet Carpets, How They Are Going To Add To Grandeur Of Central Vista Project


Bhadohi: The velvet carpets of Bhadohi, which have won fame in countries like America, Germany, Britain and France for their exquisite workmanship, are ready to add to the glory of the country's newly constructed Parliament House.


Bhadohi district is biggest carpet manufacturing centre in India. It is known for its hand-knotted carpet. The Mirzapur-Bhadohi region is the largest handmade carpet weaving cluster, engaging around 32 lakh people in the industry. Bhadohi employs 22 lakh rural artisans.


Traditionally, velvet carpets were made using the finest grade sheep's wool, but the modern varieties available today harness the properties from synthetic materials to increase longevity and make the carpet more affordable. They can be made from polyamide, polyester, Tencel, wool, or a wool/nylon blend.

Now Bhadohi's velvet carpets are ready to spread in the Central Vista project. For this, the samples of hand knotted carpets with attractive designs have been finalized. 


Central Vista is considered to be the dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Indian carpets can also play an important role in realizing the dreams of the Prime Minister. Bhadohi's attractive carpets, which have spread their charm in many influential countries will now also adorn the new Parliament of India.


Final touches have been given to the preparations for decorating the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the new Parliament House with Bhadohi's velvet carpets. For this, the order has also been received by OBT, a reputed company in the carpet area.

OBT President (Administration) IB Singh said that the company has received orders for hand knotted carpets for Central Vista. The work of preparing and decorating these carpets is in the final stage. 


Hand knotted traditional carpets of Bhadohi are being prepared to cover five thousand 282 square yard area of Central Vista. Orders have been received for 151 pieces of carpets for Rajya Sabha and 131 pieces for Lok Sabha in the campus.


IB Singh said that a team of 30 to 40 skilled artisans would be sent to Delhi for wall-to-wall fitting of carpets, which would give an attractive shape by joining these carpets neatly.
