What Move of Wrestlers Upset Khap And Farmer Leaders? Will Proposed Protest At Jantar Mantar On June 9 Will Now Be Held?

New Delhi: Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik joining the railways amid ongoing agitation against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh have upset farmers and Khap leaders. These people were about to hold a mahapanchayat in Kurukshetra.

Now they have also postponed the protest to be held at Jantar Mantar on 9th June. These farmer leaders had given an ultimatum in the Mahapanchayat of Kurukshetra that if Brij Bhushan was not arrested by June 9, they would start the protest of wrestlers again at Jantar Mantar. Recently, the Delhi Police had removed the wrestlers from Jantar Mantar.

Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik joined the Railways on Monday, a day after meeting Home Minister Amit Shah.

If wrestlers have decided to reach an agreement, then we can do nothing: Naresh Tikait

Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) spokesperson Naresh Tikait expressed surprise over the return of wrestlers to their jobs. He said, 'I don't know what agreement was reached between Home Minister Amit Shah and the wrestlers, if they themselves have decided to reach an agreement, then we cannot do anything about it.'

Rakesh Tikait, the national spokesperson of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) said, “The proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on June 9 has been cancelled. The government has started talks with the protesting wrestlers. Now a decision will be taken regarding further protest based on the outcome of the talks between the wrestlers and the government."

Although the protesting wrestlers clarified that their fight would continue until they got justice, sources said that the decision of the union home minister to meet the wrestlers indicated that the BJP was wary of the possible political fallout of the wrestler's protests.
