Bengal Panchayat Election: Results Will Be Subject To Our Final Orders, Says Kolkata High Court

Kolkata: The final result of the West Bengal panchayat elections will depend on the order of the Calcutta High Court in connection with matters which it is hearing over allegations of electoral malpractices on the day of polling. The court asked the State Election Commission why the commission announced re-polling only in 696 booths? Was there any investigation done for this?

Along with this, the court also expressed displeasure over the report of the Election Commission on the action taken regarding the violence. The court said that this report is incomplete and unsatisfactory.

Next hearing on July 19

A bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya directed the Centre, the state government and the Election Commission to file affidavits in the matter dealing with all the allegations leveled in the three PILs. The next hearing in the case will be on July 19.

The Calcutta High Court reprimanded the State Election Commission during a hearing on 11 July. The court had questioned the commission that the High Court Registry had received more than 44 emails alleging violence. Why couldn't you control these situations?

Three Public Interest Litigations (PILs) have been filed in the High Court regarding rigging and violence in the elections. The first petitioner is Shubhendu Adhikari of the BJP, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
