Khathiar Gir Eco-Region Wetland Of Chambal Sanctuary Could Be Madhya Pradesh’s Fifth Ramsar Site

Madhya Pradesh may get its fifth Ramsar Site soon. Ramsar Sites are wetlands deemed to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. There are 75 Ramsar sites in India.
 
In a meeting of the State Wetlands Authority in Bhopal held on Wednesday, chaired by the Environment Minister Hardeep Singh Dang, the proposal to include the Khathiar Gir Eco-region Wetland of the Chambal Sanctuary as the new Ramsar site of the country was approved. Now the proposal would be sent to the Centre for approval.

There are 4 Ramsar sites in state


There are 4 Ramsar sites including Bhoj wetland in the state. The other sites include Yashwant Sagar and Sirpur Talab of Indore and Sakhya Sagar of Madhav National Park Shivpuri. They have got the status of Ramsar site from the Central Government last year.

NPCA scheme


Besides, the projects of Dhar Wetland Complex (Dhupsagar, Devisagar and Munjsagar) and Girwar Talab Shajapur have been approved under the NPCA scheme of the Central Government.


NPCA or National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Eco-systems scheme is implemented for conservation and management of wetlands (including lakes) in the country on cost sharing basis between Central Government and respective State Governments.

More than 15,000 ponds with an area of more than 2 hectares are being conserved in the state as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court.
