The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 will be played from June 4 to 30. There will be 55 matches between 20 teams for 27 days in 10 cities of America and West Indies. For the first time in 147 years of cricket history, America will host any global event of ICC.
International Cricket Council (ICC) has inspected 4 shortlisted cities of America, out of which 3 have not got international status. All the venues will be finalized in the next few months.
4 US cities shortlisted, only one stadium has international status
Currently, 4 US cities Florida, Morrisville, Dallas and New York are shortlisted. Of these, only Lauderhill Stadium in Florida has got international status. Here in August, 2 T20 matches will also be played between India and West Indies. Rest 3 cities are yet to get international status. According to the ICC guideline, it is necessary to get international status for hosting the World Cup.
In US cities mostly warm-up matches will be held
Morrisville (Church Street Park) and Dallas (Grand Pier Stadium) currently host matches of the Major League Twenty20 tournament, while New York (Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx) have not hosted matches of any level including franchise or international. In US cities mostly warm-up matches will be held and only few main matches will be organised. Whereas in the West Indies, there will be fewer warm-up matches and more main matches.
Twenty teams will participate
Twenty teams will participate in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The top-8 ranked teams in the last T20 World Cup, including home team America and West Indies have already qualified. Afghanistan and Bangladesh qualified on the basis of T20I rankings. In the same week, Ireland, Scotland and Papua New Guinea (PNG) made it to the tournament through regional qualifiers.
Ireland and Scotland topped the Europe region qualifiers, while PNG topped the Asia-Pacific qualifiers. 5 more teams will qualify in the tournament. Among these, one team will come from American qualifier, 2 from Africa and 2 more teams from Asia region.
There will be 4 groups of 5 teams each
The 20 teams will be divided into 4 groups of 5 teams each. There will be 40 matches in the group stage. Top 2 teams of all the groups will reach the Super-8 stage.
There will be 12 matches in Super-8 stage. Top 2 teams of each group of Super-8 will also qualify in the semi-finals. The final of the tournament will be played on 30 June 2024 between the winning teams of the semi-finals. A total of 55 matches will be played within 27 days in the tournament including 2 semi-finals, a final and 52 group stage matches.
