Patna: The Patna High Court has ruled in favor of the Nitish-Tejashwi government in the case of caste census in Bihar. Rejecting all the petitions, the High Court has ordered the caste census to continue in Bihar. After this decision, it is believed that its political impact will start showing in Bihar.
Will corruption end in Bihar through caste census, asks BJP
While RJD has described this decision of the High Court as historical, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Vijay Sinha has asked the government to explain how corruption will end in Bihar through caste census. He has raised questions on the intention of the Bihar government in conducting caste census in Bihar.
BJP was not in favor of caste census from the beginning. All the leaders of Bihar BJP kept alleging that Nitish-Tejashwi's government is wasting Rs 500 crore in caste census. Bihar is not going to get any benefit from caste census.
Patna High Court had stayed caste census on May 4, 2023. After this the BJP continued to allege that the intention of the Bihar government on the caste census was not clear, so it was stopped by the court. Now the opposition is on the back foot and Nitish-Tejashwi Yadav are expected to gain politically.
Caste census can be used as a political weapon
Experts believe that caste census can be used as a political weapon. After the census figures are revealed, leaders like Lalu Prasad Yadav, Nitish Kumar can demand to increase the share of backward, extremely backward and Dalits. Under this, the demand for increase in reservation can also start.
By showing the caste census numbers, leaders like Lalu Yadav will be able to firmly say that if there is an increase in the population of any caste, then they should be given that much share in the society and the government. The Bihar government is saying that it will take the benefit of the welfare schemes to the people sitting at the last rung of the society.
It is also believed that after the data of caste census comes out, leaders like Nitish and Lalu can demand that the cap imposed by the Supreme Court on reservation should be removed and Backward Classes and dalits share should be given benefits according to their population.
Lalu Yadav is an expert player in making caste an issue
Lalu Yadav is an expert player in making caste an issue. During the 2015 Bihar assembly elections, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat talked about reviewing the reservation. Lalu was successful in giving this message to the Dalits, backward and extremely backward people of Bihar that BJP and RSS want to end their reservation. Now if any kind of allegation comes from the BJP on caste census, then Lalu Prasad Yadav will have a golden opportunity to redeem it.
Political parties doing backward politics can make it a new issue after the caste figures come to the fore.
Other states may also demand caste census
After the decision of the Patna High Court on caste census, there may be a demand for conducting it in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has already raised the demand for conducting caste census in Uttar Pradesh.
