Special Session Of Parliament From Monday: Which Bills Will Be Discussed, Does Govt Have Any Hidden Agenda? What Opposition Fears?

New Delhi: The five-day special session of Parliament is starting from Monday, which will continue till Friday, September 22.

The government held an all-party meeting on Sunday, a day before the special session.

Which bills will be discussed?

According to the Rajya Sabha bulletin, three bills will be discussed in the Rajya Sabha and two in the Lok Sabha in the special session of the Parliament.

The mostcontroversial among these bills is the bill related to the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner.

It is being said that the government intends to remove the Chief Justice of India from the committee for appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and hence this bill is being brought.

Till now, the committee to select the Chief Election Commissioner consists of the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice. In the new bill, it has been said that a cabinet minister will be included in place of the Chief Justice.

This  bill has already been introduced in the Rajya Sabha.

Congress has already made it clear that the parties associated with the India Alliance will oppose the Chief Election Commissioner Bill.

Cong fears govt has any hidden agenda

Despite the government making the agenda clear, the opposition party Congress has expressed apprehension that the government could bring forward some hidden agenda.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said that his party demands that the Women's Reservation Bill be passed during the special session of the Central Government.

Aam Aadmi Party says that all the parties have demanded reinstatement of MPs Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh.

As soon as the special session of Parliament was called, speculations began as to what its purpose was.

Speculations began after special session was called

Two issues which were rumoured to be taken up in the special session of Parliament include the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill and resolution to rename India as Bharat. These issues have been a point of contention between the opposition parties and the central government for several weeks now. It was widely speculated that the special session was being convened to present a bill to change country's name to Bharat.

After the announcement of calling the session, the Central Government had formed a committee on 'One Country One Election' under the chairmanship of former President Ramnath Kovind. The first meeting of this committee will be held on 23 September.

After the formation of this committee, it was said in the media that this will be discussed in the special session.

Women's Reservation Bill

Another bill that might be taken up for discussion is the Women's Reservation Bill as Congress party leaders gear up to push for it during the special session. At an all-party meeting held on Sunday, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said all opposition parties demanded the passage of the bill in this Parliament session.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said that his party demands that the Women's Reservation Bill be passed during the special session of the Central Government.
