Amidst Ongoing India-Canada Diplomatic Row, Bangladesh Said This About Canada

Dhaka: Amidst ongoing diplomatic tension between India and Canada, neighboring Bangladesh has issued a statement about Canada.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has said that Canada has become a haven for "killers".

Abdul Momen said that SHMB Noor Chowdhury, the main culprit in the murder of Bangladesh's founder and former President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members, has been living in Canada since 1996, but Canada is not cooperating in the case of his extradition.

He said, "Canada should not give shelter to murderers in its country. Killers go to Canada and take refuge there and live a good life while the families of those they kill live in difficulty."

Bangladesh court has given death sentence to Noor Chaudhary for the murder of Mujibur Rahman. But Canada has given political asylum to Noor Chaudhary and till now it has been rejecting Bangladesh's efforts to extradite him.

Another accused in the case is in America

Another accused in this murder case, Rashid Choaudhary, has also been given death sentence. He has been in America since 1990.

Abdul Momen said that the most wanted criminals of Bangladesh are escaping punishment because they are in some other country.

He said, "Our judiciary is independent and beyond government interference. If Noor Choudhary and Rashid Choudhary come to Bangladesh, they can seek pardon from the President."

The government formed in Bangladesh after the assassination of Mujibur Rahman changed the constitution and gave relief to his murderers from arrest. Both the accused in the case represented Bangladesh in diplomatic missions for nearly two decades.

In 1996, when Sheikh Hasina became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh by winning with majority. She amended the Constitution and the option of giving security to murderers was eliminated.

After this, a court sentenced Noor Chaudhary and Rashid Chaudhary to death. The Supreme Court of Bangladesh approved this decision in 2009.

Mujibur Rahman was assassinated on 14 August 1975. Every year, Bangladesh celebrates 15th August as National Mourning Day and remembers the contribution of Mujibur Rahman. His daughter Sheikh Hasina is the current Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
