The train accident on the Howrah-Chennai line in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh saw the number of casualties rise to 13, with 50 individuals sustaining injuries, as reported by Superintendent of Police M Deepika on Monday.
The accident occurred between Alamanda-Kankatpally in Vizianagaram district.
CPRO of East Coast Railway, Biswajit Sahu said, the accident happened due to human error. The driver of the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger train overshot the signal, causing it to collide with the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger train which was running ahead.
Due to this collision, five coaches of both the trains derailed. Of these, three coaches were from the train that was ahead and two coaches were from the train running behind. Biswajit Sahu informed that after the accident, 33 trains on this route have been cancelled, 11 trains have been partially canceled and the routes of 22 trains have been diverted.
Expressing profound grief over the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy instructed officials to provide an ex-gratia payment of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh to each of the injured from the state. Additionally, he announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured from other states, as per an official release.
Railways has issued emergency numbers. East Coast Railways has issued emergency numbers. These include Bhubaneswar- 0674-2301625, 2301525, 2303069 and Waltair Division- 0891- 2885914.
Centre announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, the central government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh to the injured and Rs 50 thousand in case of minor injuries.
