Bail granted to Kashmiri students arrested for celebrating India's defeat in World Cup-2023 Final, UAPA section also withdrawn

Bail has been granted to seven Kashmiri students from Agriculture University who were arrested for allegedly celebrating India's loss in the World Cup-2023 final match. The case against them under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) has also been withdrawn by the police.

The students were arrested by Ganderbal Police on November 20, 2023, following a written complaint. They had been held at Ganderbal police station. Shafiq Ahmed Bhat, the lawyer representing the accused students, confirmed the court's decision to grant bail, highlighting the significant relief for the students. The bail hearing took place in Ganderbal court.

Additionally, Shafiq Ahmed informed that the police had withdrawn the UAPA charges against the students. A family member of one of the students reported that his brother had been released by the police earlier.

The incident occurred on November 19, 2023, after India's loss to Australia in the World Cup match. A non-Kashmiri student from the university filed a complaint with the police, alleging that the seven Kashmiri students not only celebrated India's defeat but also raised slogans in support of Pakistan and threatened him.

The imposition of UAPA on the students drew strong criticism from various political parties in Kashmir.
