COP28: PM Modi in Dubai, said this about need for climate action

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Dubai on Thursday night to participate in the United Nations Climate Conference (COP28).

In his departure statement, PModi said that in keeping with our civilizational ethos, India has always laid emphasis on climate action even as we pursue social and economic development.

During our G20 Presidency, climate was high on our priority. The New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration includes numerous concrete steps on climate action and sustainable development. I look forward to the COP-28 taking forward the consensus on these issues, he said.

PModi said I look forward to joining special events including on climate finance, Green Credit initiative and LeadIT.

I also look forward to the opportunity to meet some of the other Leaders present at Dubai, and discuss ways to accelerate global climate action, he said.

We all want to participate in the solution of this problem

In an interview given to UAE newspaper Al-Etihad, PM Modi has said that developing countries have not created this problem, yet we all want to participate in the solution of this problem. But this is not possible without financial and technical help, therefore I appeal for global cooperation.

Speaking to the newspaper, PM Modi said, “India and the UAE stand as partners in shaping a green future. I believe climate action must be based on equity, climate justice, shared responsibilities and shared capabilities. Only by following these principles can we move towards a sustainable future in which no one will be left behind.”

Global South spoke for need for climate action

PModi said COP28 will also provide an opportunity to review progress made under the Paris Agreement, and chart a path for future course on climate action. At the Voice of Global South Summit convened by India, the Global South spoke for the need for climate action based on the principles of equity, climate justice, and common but differentiated responsibilities, as well as a greater focus on adaptation.

PModi said it is important that efforts of the developing world be supported with adequate climate financing and technology transfer.  They must have access to equitable carbon and development space to achieve sustainable development.

India has walked the talk when it comes to climate action. Our achievements in different sectors like renewable energy, energy efficiency, afforestation, energy conservation, Mission LiFE are testament to the commitment of our people towards mother Earth, PModi added.

COP means Conference of Parties. Which is organized every year. This is the 28th such conference. This is the world's only multilateral decision-making platform on climate change, in which every country of the world participates.

This year UAE is hosting it. This conference will run from 30 November to 12 December.

In this conference, discussions are held on reducing carbon emissions and making the energy transition better and faster.
