Embracing Tradition: Ayodhya's Ram Lalla Temple To Don Skin-Friendly Kachnar Gulal


Lucknow: The upcoming Holi festivities at Ayodhya's esteemed temple of Lord Shri Ram Lalla promise an unparalleled vibrancy, courtesy of the introduction of skin-friendly gulal derived from Kachnar flowers. Crafted by the brilliant minds at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Botanical Research Institute (CSIR-NBRI), this special gulal honours Ayodhya's botanical legacy while ensuring a safe and enjoyable celebration for all.


Historical significance of Kachnar


Dr. Ajit Kumar Shashani, the director of the institute, underlined the historical significance of Kachnar as the state tree of Ayodhya in Tretayuga. he said this tree plays its role as a well-established medicine in Ayurveda.


Dr. Shashani said, "Kachnar symbolizes our rich cultural heritage. This tree's association with Ayodhya inspired us to make gulal for Ram Lalla from this sacred plant. This initiative is a proof of our commitment to conserve Ayodhya's botanical legacy."


Kachnar: Botanical Marvel


Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata), belonging to the legume family, is renowned in the Indian subcontinent for its edible buds, widely utilized in regional cuisine and revered for its medicinal properties. From tasty stir-fried dishes to flavorful pickles, Kachnar buds hold a cherished place in culinary traditions across the subcontinent.



Herbal Gulal Presented to CM


The Kachnar gulal was ceremoniously presented to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, signifying its significance in the upcoming Holi celebrations at the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.


Herbal Gulal Innovations


In addition to Kachnar-based gulal, CSIR-NBRI has developed herbal gulal infused with flowers sourced from the revered Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur. Available in captivating lavender and sandalwood fragrances, these eco-friendly gulals seamlessly blend tradition with innovation.


Safety and eco-friendliness of herbal gulals


Dr. Shashani reiterated the safety and eco-friendliness of these herbal gulals, devoid of harmful chemicals like lead, chromium, and nickel. In stark contrast to chemical-laden counterparts, these herbal gulals boast natural ingredients gentle on the skin and easily washable, ensuring a worry-free celebration.


Promoting Eco-Friendly Alternatives


The transfer of Herbal Gulal technology to various enterprises and start-ups aims to bolster the availability of sustainable alternatives in the market. Dr. Shashani cautioned against chemical gulals, as they can trigger allergies and skin irritations. He highlighted the distinct advantages of herbal gulal, including minimal hand staining.
