Why All Assam Students Union has started a protest across state?

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has started a hunger strike across Assam on Sunday, demanding the repeal of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). 30 tribal organizations are also supporting this protest against CAA.

Kamrup District Unit Students Union workers sat on a 12-hour hunger strike from 6 am near Dighlipukhuri in Guwahati city. Apart from Guwahati, this hunger strike and protest was held in Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Charaideo, Bilasipara, Nalbari and many districts of the state.

'Threat to cultural and demographic fabric of Assam'

The student organization of the state says that CAA is a threat to the cultural and demographic fabric of Assam. Therefore, the government needs to reconsider its stand regarding this controversial law passed in December 2019.

Prior to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Assam on March 8, the All Assam Students Union and other regional organizations had launched their protest program against the implementation of CAA with bike rallies across the state.

All Assam Students Union President Utpal Sarma said that this anti-Assam law will not be accepted. Assam will not bear the burden of foreigners under any circumstances.

He said in a statement, "According to the Assam Accord, we have already borne the burden of additional Bangladeshis till 1971. Therefore, a small state like Assam cannot once again bear the additional burden of a foreign citizen, be it Hindu or Muslim. "

Earlier, opposition parties in Assam had requested to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the state regarding CAA.

Joint Opposition Forum submits memo to President

The Joint Opposition Forum, an alliance of 16 opposition parties from the state, has submitted a memorandum to the President of India through the Governor of Assam, calling for repeal of the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said last month that CAA is the law of the country and its notification will be issued before the Lok Sabha elections.

He had said that CAA will be implemented before the elections.

After this statement of the Home Minister, local organizations have started uniting to protest against CAA in Assam.
