The Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) has put forward Rahul Gandhi's name for Amethi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's for Raebareli, pending their consent. The ultimate decision rests with Mallikarjun Kharge. CEC members have delegated this decision to Kharge after advocating for these two members of the Gandhi family to run from these constituencies.
Amethi and Raebareli hold significant historical importance as Congress strongholds. However, Amethi saw a victory for BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019, while Raebareli was vacated by Sonia Gandhi. Although there were speculations about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contesting from Raebareli, the party is yet to officially announce the candidates for these crucial seats.
Rahul had expressed his readiness to contest from Amethi
Rahul Gandhi had previously expressed his readiness to contest from Amethi if the party deemed it necessary. With the voting in Wayanad completed, the chances of Rahul Gandhi being selected as the candidate for a second constituency, Amethi, have grown.
Kharge reassured that the uncertainty surrounding the candidates for Amethi and Raebareli would be resolved soon. He stated that once the candidates' names are finalized and he signs the notification, the announcements will follow. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi contested from Amethi and Wayanad, losing Amethi to Smriti Irani. The decision for his dual candidacy this time was initially kept undisclosed, despite BJP's claims that he abandoned Amethi for Wayanad.
