Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha Election 2024: Why did Congress choose Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi? How will he challenge BJP's Smriti Irani?

Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha Election 2024: The suspense over the Congress candidates' names for two seats in Uttar Pradesh was lifted on Friday. Rahul Gandhi is contesting the elections from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat, while Kishori Lal Sharma (KL Sharma) has been chosen as the Congress candidate from Amethi. Rahul Gandhi has now entered the electoral arena from Rae Bareli.

Moving from Amethi to Rae Bareli

Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seats are considered traditional seats of the Congress and the Nehru-Gandhi family. The Gandhi family's connection to these two seats has long been established. For 25 years, Amethi has been synonymous with the Gandhis, but this upcoming election marks a significant shift.

Since its establishment as a constituency in 1967, Amethi has been a stronghold of the Gandhi family, with a member representing it for approximately 31 years. However, in the last general election in 2019, the BJP's Smriti Irani won over Rahul Gandhi by a margin exceeding 55,000 votes, breaking the Congress fortress. Rahul Gandhi will now contest from Rae Bareli, a seat recently vacated by his mother, Sonia Gandhi. To reclaim Amethi, the Congress has nominated their trusted candidate, Kishori Lal Sharma.

Why does the Gandhi family trust KL Sharma?

It should be noted that Kishori Lal Sharma has had a decades-long association with the Gandhi family. Hailing from Ludhiana in Punjab, Kishori Lal Sharma, aka KL Sharma, has been an integral member of the Congress for over four decades. He enjoys the trust of both the Congress party and the Gandhi family. After Sonia Gandhi stepped down to pave the way for her son Rahul, Sharma took charge of party affairs in Amethi and Raebareli.

Sharma forged a tight bond with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and this connection deepened further after Gandhi's death in 1991. Sharma played a pivotal role in securing Sonia Gandhi's inaugural electoral triumph in 1999, solidifying his ties with the Gandhi family.

Sharma also has a longstanding connection with Amethi

KL Sharma not only took charge of party affairs in Amethi and Rae Bareli following Sonia Gandhi's resignation but also has a longstanding connection with Amethi, stretching back to 1983. His dedication to the Congress party and the Gandhis has been unwavering ever since his arrival in Amethi.

While Sharma has a longstanding connection with Amethi, his electoral battle against BJP's Smriti Irani is expected to be challenging. Irani made history in 2019 by becoming the first to wrest the Gandhi bastion, defeating Rahul Gandhi by a significant margin of over 55,000 votes. Amethi's upcoming polls on May 20, slated for the 5th phase of the elections, will witness the unfolding contest.
