Weather: Onset of monsoon-2024 in Kerala likely to be early, rainy season may start in MP from this date


The onset of the monsoon in Kerala is anticipated to occur between May 27 and June 4, 2024, aligning closely with the typical arrival window of June 1 to 4. Mrityunjay Mahapatra, the Director General of the IMD, emphasized that this timing is not unusually early, as it falls within the normal range. 


The South-West Monsoon is projected to reach Kerala around May 31, which will serve as a benchmark for determining its progression to other states. This event marks the commencement of a crucial four-month rainy season vital for India's agriculture-driven economy. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the arrival of the south-west monsoon in Kerala will be on May 31, with a potential deviation of up to four days either earlier or later.


Previously, the Meteorological Department had anticipated the south-west monsoon's arrival at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by May 19, three days ahead of the usual schedule. Traditionally, the monsoon graces the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by May 22. Following this, it progresses towards Kerala. In terms of its regular schedule, the monsoon typically makes its way to Maharashtra by June 10.


SW Monsoon will reach Bhopal-Indore division around June 20


According to IMD, the SW Monsoon will reach Bhopal-Indore division around June 20. However, the monsoon will enter the state via east MP and will then proceed to Bhopal, Indore. Pre-monsoon showers start lashing the region several days before the arrival of monsoon.


A new Western Disturbance is going to hit the Western Himalayan region on May 17, due to which there will be light to moderate rain in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand during May 17-19. The Meteorological Department says that the maximum temperature in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Eastern Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch, Vidarbha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Western Uttar Pradesh was 40-42 degrees Celsius.
