Prices of tomatoes surge, see details

Retail prices of tomatoes in the national capital have risen to Rs 70-80 per kg due to reduced supply due to the recent scorching heat. Mother Dairy, a major supplier of fruits and vegetables in the Delhi-NCR region, is selling tomatoes at Rs 75 per kg at its retail outlet 'Safal'. Local vegetable vendors are selling tomatoes at Rs 70-80 per kg.

A Mother Dairy spokesperson said on Friday, "The yield of this crop has been affected due to the recent severe heat in the major tomato producing areas of the hilly areas. Due to the reduced yield, the supply of tomatoes in retail markets has been limited and this has led to a surge in prices."

Local vendors have attributed the high retail prices of tomatoes to a sharp increase in wholesale prices at Rs 50-60 per kg.

However, according to data compiled by the Department of Consumer Affairs, retail prices of tomatoes in Delhi are Rs 55 per kg. The all India average price of tomato on Friday was Rs 58.25 per kg. The maximum and minimum prices of tomato were recorded at Rs 130 per kg and Rs 20 per kg respectively.

Apart from tomato, retail prices of potato and onion are also witnessing a rise. The all India average retail prices of potato and onion have gone up to Rs 35.34 per kg and Rs 43.01 per kg respectively.
