If you are familiar with the Indian epic, the Mahabharata, you would know that Duryodhana is often depicted with shades of grey. Though he is one of the most despised characters in the epic, he is also portrayed as brilliant, kind, and courageous. As the eldest of the 100 Kaurava brothers, Duryodhana is the prime villain in the Mahabharata. This begs the question: why would there be a temple dedicated to such a controversial figure?
Despite being the main antagonist in the Mahabharata, there is indeed a temple dedicated to King Duryodhana in the Kollam district of Kerala. The most unusual aspect of this shrine is that it has no sanctum sanctorum or idol of the king. Instead, there is a raised platform called Mandapam where devotees can pray and meditate. The reason for dedicating a temple to an infamous king like Duryodhana lies in an intriguing legend.
The Legend
Although Duryodhana is known for his jealousy and his mistreatment of his sister-in-law Draupadi, he possessed some admirable qualities. According to the legend, during the Pandavas' exile, Duryodhana went searching for them in the southern forests of Kerala. Reaching Kollam district, he was extremely thirsty and was offered water by an untouchable old lady of the Kurava caste. Duryodhana, who did not believe in the caste system, was deeply touched by her hospitality. The Kuravas also offered him food and shelter, for which he was immensely grateful.
Moved by their kindness, Duryodhana prayed for the well-being of the villagers and donated a large piece of agricultural land to them. To show his gratitude, he sat on a hill and prayed to Lord Shiva for the prosperity of the people living in the village. This act of gratitude and his prayerful demeanor left a lasting impression on the villagers.
Temple pays property tax in Duryodhana's name
In memory of his benevolent actions, the villagers built the Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada Temple on the very spot where Duryodhana meditated. Remarkably, the temple pays property tax every year in Duryodhana's name, reflecting the villagers' enduring love and respect for him. Furthermore, the temple’s priest continues to come from the Kurava community, honoring the connection established by Duryodhana’s respect for their hospitality.
Thus, the Duryodhana Temple stands as a unique testament to the complexity of human character and the enduring legacy of gratitude and respect.
