Mysterious Bhangarh Fort: A Haunting Adventure Awaits in Rajasthan

If you are someone who craves adventure and enjoys exploring places shrouded in mystery, then Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan should definitely be on your list. This infamous fort, known for its eerie atmosphere and paranormal legends, offers visitors a unique experience—one that is not for the faint-hearted.

While it stands as a historical ruin, Bhangarh is most renowned for the stories and beliefs surrounding its destruction and the supernatural forces said to linger within its walls. Visitors are strongly advised not to enter the fort after dark, as locals and officials alike have shared numerous spine-chilling tales about this place.

Was built in 16th century

Bhangarh Fort is located on the border of the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Alwar district of Rajasthan. Built in the 16th century by Bhagwant Das, the fort was originally intended as a residence for his second son, Madho Singh. Though once a flourishing structure, today it lies in complete ruin. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken a firm stance against entry after sunset. This is cemented its reputation as one of the most haunted places in India.

Tourists are drawn to its eerie allure

Despite the fort’s dilapidated state, many tourists are drawn to its historical and eerie allure. Bhangarh’s tragic past and mysterious atmosphere continue to pique the curiosity of adventurers, history buffs, and those with a taste for the supernatural. The reasons behind the fort’s destruction are still a subject of debate, and several legends persist—each one offering a different explanation.

Haunting Legends

The most popular legend surrounding Bhangarh Fort involves a local sorcerer who fell in love with the beautiful Princess Ratnavati. The sorcerer, determined to win her affection through magical means, cursed the fort and its residents after the princess foiled his plans. According to legend, this curse led to the fort’s destruction and is believed to be the reason why Bhangarh remains haunted to this day.

Villagers have relocated far from the fort

Many villagers who lived near Bhangarh have relocated far from the fort, citing strange occurrences and ghostly encounters as their reasons for moving. Visitors often report feelings of unease, a sense of being watched, or hearing unexplained sounds when inside the fort. These experiences have further solidified its status as a haunted site, attracting thrill-seekers from across the country.

Scenic Surroundings

Despite its haunting reputation, Bhangarh Fort offers visitors more than just ghost stories. The fort, nestled in the Aravalli hills, is surrounded by lush greenery and scenic beauty. A stream runs through the palace complex, adding to the fort’s picturesque yet eerie charm.

Fort can be accessed through four main gates

The entrance to the fort is marked by temples and palaces, each with its own unique design and historical significance. Bhangarh Fort can be accessed through four main gates: Lahori Gate, Ajmeri Gate, Phulbari Gate, and Delhi Gate. These gates lead into the remains of what was once a thriving town, now reduced to an eerie silence. The remnants of Johri Bazaar and Nachan Ki Haveli (Dancer's Palace) still stand, reminding visitors of the life that once filled these now desolate halls.

How to Reach Bhangarh Fort

Located about 235 kilometers from Delhi and 88 kilometers from Jaipur, Bhangarh Fort is relatively easy to access. The last stretch of the journey involves navigating a dirt road that leads to the fort’s entrance, adding to the sense of anticipation. The nearest airport is Jaipur International Airport, making it convenient for travelers flying in from other parts of the country.

For those who wish to explore the fort, it is advisable to visit during the day. The ASI has strictly prohibited entry after sunset due to the numerous paranormal claims associated with the fort. While daytime visits are safe, the stories and atmosphere of the fort may still send shivers down your spine.

Bhangarh Fort stands as a fascinating mix of historical significance and supernatural intrigue. It offers visitors a chance to delve into the past while also experiencing the thrill of the unknown.
