The day after the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, the college's former principal Sandip Ghosh had ordered the renovation of the rooms adjoining the seminar hall. This has come to light in the CBI investigation. The trainee doctor's body was found in the seminar hall on the morning of August 9.
The CBI has found documents that confirm that Sandip Ghosh had written a letter on August 10 asking the State Public Works Department (PWD) to renovate the rooms and toilets adjoining the seminar hall. Ghosh's signature is also on this permission letter.
This letter can become a link between the rape-murder case and financial irregularities.
Ghosh was in a hurry to get the renovation done
According to sources, earlier it was believed that the PWD was instructed to start the renovation work by some administrative officer of RG Kar Medical College. But, after receiving the permission letter, it has become clear that Ghosh was in a hurry to get the renovation done.
Investigating officers say that it is clear from this document that Ghosh was in a hurry to get the renovation done, so this document can help in connecting the link between the rape-murder case and the case of financial irregularities in RG Kar College.
On the evening of August 13, when the division bench of the Calcutta High Court handed over the case to the CBI, a few hours later the PWD staff started renovating the room adjoining the seminar hall. However, the college students started protesting on a large scale regarding this case, due to which the renovation work was stopped there.
Sources said that the investigating officials believe that since the document shows Ghosh's keenness in getting the renovation done, it can be handy in establishing the links between the two parallel investigations by the agency -- the first being on the rape and murder case and the second on the financial irregularities at RG Kar.
Incidentally, Ghosh is currently in CBI custody in connection with the financial irregularities case.
The protesting representatives from the state's medical fraternity have been claiming that the incident at RG Kar was not an isolated case of rape and murder and the victim was killed as she became aware of the irregularities.
Members of the medical fraternity of West Bengal, who were protesting, say that RG Kar College was not the only college where rapes and murders are being committed. The trainee doctor was killed because he came to know about the financial irregularities of the college.
Sandeep Ghosh was arrested by CBI on 2 Sep
On August 13, the High Court handed over the investigation of the rape-murder case and financial irregularities in the hospital to the CBI. Meanwhile, on September 2, the CBI arrested Sandeep Ghosh on charges of financial irregularities.
On September 3, Ghosh was produced in Alipore Judges Court, where he and three others were sent to CBI custody for 8 days.
On September 4, Sandeep Ghosh filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the High Court's order handing over the investigation of the case to the CBI. The Supreme Court will hear the petition on September 6.
