Fintech leader PhonePe has made significant strides in automating its operational processes through Artificial Intelligence (AI), leading to a 60% reduction in its customer support staff. According to the company's latest annual report filed on October 21, the number of support agents dropped from around 1,100 to just over 400 in the past five years. This period of transformation, spanning from fiscal year 2019 (FY19) to fiscal year 2024 (FY24), has been marked by major advancements in AI adoption, especially in customer service.
40-Fold Growth in Transactions from FY19 to FY24
During the same five-year window, PhonePe also witnessed an astounding 40-fold increase in transaction volume, underscoring the effectiveness of its AI-powered approach. This exponential growth was achieved while simultaneously streamlining its workforce. This reflects how automation has helped the company manage its scaling operations efficiently.
AI-Powered Chatbots Handle Majority of Customer Issues
One of the standout achievements highlighted in the report is that over 90% of customer service issues are now being handled by AI-powered chatbots. These automated systems have significantly enhanced the company's operational efficiency. PhonePe attributes this shift to its strategy of focusing on automation and improving unit economics.
Job Creation Amid Automation: Over 22,000 New Jobs Across India
Despite the significant reduction in customer support staff, PhonePe emphasizes that the adoption of AI has not harmed overall employment in the fintech sector. On the contrary, the company's innovations have contributed to the creation of more than 22,000 new jobs across India. These roles span various domains, with a particular focus on enhancing the country's digital payments ecosystem. Currently, PhonePe boasts a team of over 1,500 engineers working on further advancements in the field.
Revenue and Profit Growth Fueled by AI
The financial impact of AI-driven automation has been substantial. PhonePe's revenue saw a remarkable 74% increase in just one year, and the company reported a positive net profit. This growth demonstrates how AI has not only streamlined operations but also made tasks easier and more efficient, many of which were previously performed manually.
Experts Weigh In: AI's Impact on Jobs
While there are concerns that AI may displace human workers, experts suggest that the overall impact may not lead to widespread unemployment. As evidenced by PhonePe's experience, technological advancements like AI can also generate new job opportunities, balancing the shift towards automation with job creation.
In summary, PhonePe's successful integration of AI has transformed its operations, enabling the company to reduce costs, improve customer satisfaction, and achieve significant growth—all while contributing to job creation across India.
