Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Kazan BRICS Summit, marking their first bilateral meeting at the delegation level in nearly five years. The talks, held on Wednesday, focused on the resolution of border issues and strengthening bilateral relations.
During a press briefing in Kazan, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri shared details of the meeting, highlighting that both leaders welcomed the recent agreements on border issues. These agreements were reached through sustained diplomatic dialogues over the past few weeks.
Misri emphasized that Modi and Xi agreed that the special representatives (SRs) on the India-China boundary issue would play a pivotal role in resolving the long-standing disputes. The leaders instructed that the SRs should meet soon and continue their efforts toward a peaceful resolution.
According to Foreign Secretary Misri, both leaders recognized that a stable bilateral relationship between India and China would significantly contribute to regional and global peace and prosperity. They stressed the importance of approaching their relationship with maturity, wisdom, and mutual respect. By doing so, both nations could maintain peaceful and stable ties, benefiting not only the two countries but also the broader region.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Modi and Xi to review the current state of bilateral relations from a strategic and long-term perspective. They discussed key regional and international developments of mutual concern and interest, agreeing to maintain open lines of communication to address these issues.
Mutual trust will guide bilateral relations: Modi
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Prime Minister Modi reflected on the meeting, stating, "Met President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Kazan BRICS Summit. India-China relations are important for the people of our countries, and for regional and global peace and stability. Mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual sensitivity will guide bilateral relations."
This meeting between the two leaders followed a significant breakthrough earlier in the week. On Monday, both nations reached a major agreement regarding patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The agreement will allow Indian and Chinese soldiers to resume regular patrolling activities along the LAC, as they had been doing before the border tensions escalated in May 2020.
Foreign Secretary Misri, in announcing this breakthrough, noted that diplomatic and military negotiators from both sides had been in close communication for several weeks across various platforms. As a result of these negotiations, the two countries agreed on the patrolling arrangements along the LAC, which will lead to the disengagement of forces and a resolution of the issues that arose in 2020.
This renewed commitment to dialogue and cooperation is seen as a positive step toward rebuilding trust between India and China, with both nations focusing on stability and long-term peace in the region.
