Shiv Sena (UBT) has released its first list of 65 candidates for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections 2024, scheduled for November 2024. Party chief Uddhav Thackeray made the announcement, revealing that his son, Aditya Thackeray, will contest from the Worli constituency. Other notable candidates include Rajan Vichare, who has been fielded from Thane.
One of the key highlights is the selection of Kedar Dighe as the candidate from Kopri Pachpakhadi, where he will face off against the current Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde. This list marks Shiv Sena (UBT) as the first party within the Maharashtra Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance to announce its candidates. The Congress and NCP (Sharad Pawar) factions are expected to release their lists soon.
MVA Seat-Sharing Formula Finalized
The MVA, consisting of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar), has also finalized its seat-sharing arrangement for the elections. Each of the three major parties will contest 85 seats, amounting to a total of 255 out of the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra. The remaining 33 seats will be allocated to smaller alliance partners such as the Samajwadi Party, Swabhimani Paksha (SWP), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)].
Maharashtra will hold its assembly elections in a single phase on November 20, 2024, with results expected to be declared on November 23. The current term of the state assembly ends on November 26.
Mahayuti Alliance Also Moves Forward
Meanwhile, the rival Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, continues to firm up its own candidate lists. On October 23, the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the NCP released its first list of 38 candidates. Ajit Pawar, who serves as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, will be contesting from Baramati, a seat that falls within the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency.
With both the MVA and Mahayuti alliances now in the process of finalizing their candidates, the political landscape in Maharashtra is heating up ahead of the November elections.
