On Dhanvantari Jayanti, coinciding with the 9th Ayurveda Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated several major healthcare initiatives worth Rs 12,850 crore across 18 states. Hosting the virtual event from the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in Delhi, PM Modi introduced a series of health projects, expanding the reach of healthcare services under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY).
Expansion of Ayushman Bharat Coverage
One of the primary announcements during the launch was the extension of Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY benefits to senior citizens aged 70 and above, who will now receive free medical treatment worth up to Rs 5 lakh. This expansion reflects the government's commitment to providing affordable healthcare to the elderly, ensuring they can access medical services without the financial burden.
Health projects launched across 18 states
Health projects were launched across 18 states, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Bihar, as part of this broader health initiative. Additionally, PM Modi inaugurated the country's first air ambulance service, named "Sanjeevani," from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh. This air ambulance service aims to provide emergency medical care across remote areas where immediate access to healthcare facilities is limited.
Apology to Delhi and Bengal Senior Citizens
During his address, PM Modi expressed regret that the new benefits for senior citizens could not be extended to elderly residents of Delhi and West Bengal. He explained that due to the state governments in Delhi and Bengal not participating in the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme, citizens in these regions would not benefit from the recent expansions. PM Modi shared his sentiments, saying, "I apologize to the elderly above 70 years of age in Delhi and Bengal that I will not be able to serve them. Political selfishness is preventing me from serving them."
Dhanvantari Jayanti and Ayurveda's Global Reach
Reflecting on the significance of Dhanvantari Jayanti, PM Modi emphasized that celebrating health on this auspicious day embodies Indian culture's deep-rooted philosophy of holistic well-being. He highlighted the global resonance of Ayurveda, noting that Ayurveda Day is being celebrated in over 150 countries. This, he said, signifies the increasing global interest and appreciation of Ayurveda as a traditional and effective healthcare practice.
Impact of the Ayushman Bharat Scheme
PM Modi highlighted the Ayushman Bharat scheme's success, mentioning that around 4 crore underprivileged Indians have benefited from it. "If there were no Ayushman Bharat scheme," he stated, "these poor families would have had to spend approximately Rs 1.25 lakh crore from their own pockets." Many of these beneficiaries received hospital treatment for various ailments without any out-of-pocket expenses.
Cost Savings in Healthcare and Innovations in Technology
The Prime Minister noted other impactful measures aimed at reducing healthcare costs, including the reduced prices of stents and knee replacement devices. These cost reductions, along with the free dialysis scheme, have saved citizens nearly Rs 80,000 crore. PM Modi also mentioned Mission Indradhanush, a national initiative focused on protecting mothers and newborns from life-threatening diseases, which has significantly reduced risks for these vulnerable groups.
2 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs set up
In addition to infrastructure projects, over 2 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (health centers) have been established. These centers are actively providing early disease screenings for conditions such as cancer, hypertension, and diabetes, allowing for timely medical intervention. Another key component of India’s health reform is the e-Sanjeevani scheme, under which 30 crore people have consulted certified doctors online, saving costs through free consultations.
Emphasis on Accessible and Comprehensive Healthcare
Through these initiatives, the government underscores its commitment to making quality healthcare accessible to all. With the expansion of Ayushman Bharat and the integration of advanced technology in health services, PM Modi’s administration aims to create a more inclusive healthcare system, ensuring that even the most vulnerable populations are not left behind.
