For the first time in the history of the Indian Navy, a sibling duo—Commander Prerna Deosthalee and Commander Ishan Deosthalee—is commanding two different warships at the same time. This remarkable milestone celebrates both their individual achievements and highlights the growing inclusivity and strength within India’s maritime forces.
Prerna Deosthalee’s Trailblazing Journey
Commander Prerna Deosthalee became the first woman officer to command a warship in the Indian Navy last year, marking a pivotal step forward for women in military roles. She currently leads the fast attack craft, INS Trinkat, a vital asset in India’s naval fleet. Her historic achievement paved the way for other female officers to aim for leadership roles in combat and command.
Ishan Deosthalee’s New Command
Following his sister's groundbreaking accomplishment, Commander Ishan Deosthalee has now taken command of INS Vibhuti, a Veer-class missile vessel in the Indian Navy. INS Vibhuti recently featured in a ceremonial steam past event for President Droupadi Murmu off the coast of Goa, showcasing India’s naval capabilities in the Arabian Sea. This event further highlighted the significance of INS Vibhuti under Commander Ishan’s leadership and exemplified the Navy’s commitment to honoring its commanders and vessels.
Both Prerna and Ishan serve under the Indian Navy's Western Command, where they lead their respective warships and contribute to the Navy’s strategic operations in India’s maritime zones.
Presidential Visit and Commendation of the Navy
On November 7, President Droupadi Murmu, accompanied by Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, visited the Indian aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and observed an operational demonstration by the Indian Navy. The President praised the Navy's capabilities, strategic reach, and ability to respond promptly in times of need.
President Murmu lauded the Indian Navy's continuous efforts to safeguard maritime borders and provide assistance in times of distress.
A Proud Moment for India
The achievements of Commander Prerna and Commander Ishan Deosthalee mark a significant moment in the Indian Navy’s history. Their simultaneous command of separate warships is an inspiration for aspiring officers and a testament to the Navy’s dedication to merit, inclusion, and excellence in defense.
