A tragic bus accident on Friday afternoon in Godiya, Maharashtra, claimed the lives of 12 passengers, while more than 20 others sustained injuries, with 10 in critical condition. The mishap occurred near Khajri village, approximately 30 km from Gondiya.
The Shivshahi bus (MH 09 EM 1273), operated by the Maharashtra State Transport Corporation, was en route from Bhandara to Godiya when the accident took place around 12:30 p.m.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus driver lost control while attempting to avoid a collision with a bike rider. The bus struck a roadside railing and overturned. The driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.
Emergency services quickly responded, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities fear the death toll may rise due to the severity of injuries sustained by several passengers.
In response to the incident, Maharashtra’s acting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his condolences and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, and the injured passengers have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The tragic event has left the community in shock, with a large crowd gathering at the accident site.
